Dr. Haiming Liu is an Associate Professor in the Web and Internet Science (WAIS) research group within Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton (Soton) in the UK. She contributes to research, project supervision, and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Before joining Soton, Dr. Liu served as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Technology, University of Bedfordshire (UoB), and as a Lecturer at the School of Computing, Engineering, and Physical Sciences, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). She also worked as a User Experience Developer at the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) at The Open University (OU). Dr. Liu earned her PhD from KMi, The Open University, in 2010. Her doctoral thesis explored user interaction with content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems, focusing on three key aspects: a user interaction model, interactive interfaces, and user behavior.
Dr. Liu's research centers on user-centered interactive multimedia and multimodal information access, encompassing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates Computer Science, Information Science, Data Science, Information Retrieval, Psychology, Social Science, Biology, and Creative Technologies. Her research applications span diverse fields such as E-learning, E-commerce, E-health, E-government, and Digital Humanities. Through her work, Dr. Liu has developed expertise in designing and building multimedia and multimodal information-seeking and search systems, creating theory-based user models from interaction data (including bio-sensor data), enhancing user experience and interaction design, and advancing knowledge in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Information Foraging Theory, Emotions Theory, and Cross-Cultural Theory.
In her leisure time, Dr. Liu enjoys running and traveling, particularly sightseeing on foot. She regularly participates in half-marathons and marathons. Passionate about exploring new countries and cultures, she relishes the opportunity to experience diverse landscapes and traditions. She also loves spending quality time with her daughters, including accompanying them to their various activities.
